Discovering that my friend Wladimir Alberto Martins is just as talented with a camera as he is with painting and sculpture was almost as much a surprise as it was to hear the story of the enslaved king from the Congo who had survived the voyage across the Atlantic with his son, although his wife and daughter had not. Sold to work in a gold mine in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil, legend has it that Chico Rei had never lost his nobility or ingenuity, eventually buying freedom for his people and re-crowned in a strange, new world that still celebrates his legend every January.

Descobrir que meu amigo Wladimir Alberto Martins é tão talentoso com uma câmera quanto ele é com pintura e escultura foi quase tão surpreendente quanto ouvir a história do escravizado Rei do Congo. Diz a lenda que a mulher e filha dele não sobreviveram à travessia do Atlântico, mas ao chegar ao Brasil, o Chico Rei e seu filho foram vendidos para trabalhar em uma mina de ouro em Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais. A historia conta que ele nunca perdeu sua nobreza ou ingenuidade, e Chico Rei conseguiu comprar a liberdade para seu povo e foi recoroado em um mundo novo e estranho, onde ainda se celebra sua lenda todo mês de janeiro.

Congo Baroque

The motivation behind my camera was the religious syncretism and the tradition of a culture, the simplicity in the details of the robes, the saturated contrasts of skin with the texture of  vibrant fabrics translated into an authentic aesthetic wealth presented in this photo essay, Congo Baroque, the fruit of yet another one of my wanderings through the folklore of Brazilian culture.

It was by chance that I decided to return to Ouro Preto and revisit all the spectacular architecture peculiar to this baroque city of the State of Minas Gerais, its history of wealth and decline, of luxury and simplicity. Ouro Preto is the mecca of carving. Its architectural style seduces photographically with all its shapes, leading me up and down its slopes through a baroque land. The city is more than the master Aleijadinho and the legacy of his artistic work, the local culture itself is enriching, and that is how I discovered Chico Rei and the Congada and the history perpetuated in the ancestral oral tradition, celebrated to this very day on the first Sunday of every year, with the procession from the Chapel of Padre Faria to the gold mine of Chico Rei, evoking colors, drums, rhythm and faith.

O Congo Barroco

Foi o sincretismo religioso e a tradição de uma cultura que motivaram meus cliques, a simplicidade nos detalhes das vestes, os contrastes saturados de pele com as texturas dos tecidos pujantes me traduziram uma autêntica riqueza estética. E assim apresento este ensaio fotográfico O Congo Barroco em mais uma de minhas andanças pelo folclore e cultura popular brasileira.

Por acaso decidi ir para Ouro Preto e revisitar toda a espetacular arquitetura peculiar dessa cidade mineira histórica, além de sua história de riqueza e declínio, do luxo e da simplicidade. Ouro Preto é a meca do entalhamento. Seu estilo arquitetônico seduz o olhar fotográfico das formas, e dessa forma deixei-me enveredar pelas ladeiras da terra barroca. Não só o mestre Aleijadinho e seu legado em obras artísticas, a cultura local também enobrece, e foi assim que descobri Chico Rei, a Congada e sua história perpetuada na oralidade ancestral até os dias de hoje e encenada todo primeiro domingo do ano que vai da Capela do Padre Faria à mina de ouro do Chico Rei evocando cores, tambores, ritmo e fé.
